Rodgers disappointed by defeat

To be perfectly honest these defeats are no surprise any more. Rodgers himself is beginning to sound like a stuck record with his post match comments. The all too familiar, “I cannot fault the efforts of the players” is wearing a bit thin. I think we want a bit more than effort. A bit of quality, or winning mentality, or ruthlessness would be welcome.

To illustrate, take one incident from last night’s game that sums up the good effort made but the ultimate lack of quality when needed. Ben Foster made a great save from Steven Gerrard. The ball was palmed out and Fabio Borini showed great effort to get to the ball first, but the quality of his finish was woeful.

Today it was Jordan Henderson’s turn to trip out the tried and trusted, “we must learn from this” verdict. What, yet another game we need to learn from!! West Brom were a big, physical side who showed plenty of aggression, commitment and organisation (sound familiar, for West Brom read Stoke City, Aston Villa and Oldham). We lost those games in similar fashion to last night – in other words we lost with a whimper. Didn’t we say then that we need to learn from those games. Looking at last night, what have we actually learned previously. It is not as if we didn’t know what to expect from Stoke for instance, and yet we played right into their hands in terms of tactics and team selection.

Have we not already learned that we need to play more than one up front at home in a “must-win game”

Have we not learned that we cannot give away free headers at set pieces (goals conceded from set pieces this season are numerous).

Have we not learned that we need a big, commanding, dominating centre-back (maybe Martin Kelly will fit that bill).

Have we not learned that we need a new keeper.

It goes to show now how normal these results are irrespective of how much possession we have or chances we create. After a half an hour or so, if we haven’t scored then the inevitable happens – our opponents score from their first clear chance (again refer back to Aston Villa and Stoke).

If there is any lessons to be learned by fans, players and management alike is that we are simply not good enough. For instance, if a learner driver put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake once then you could put that down to part of the learning process. Making the same mistake over and over again may suggest that you are just not a good driver.

We have to accept that we are simply not good enough.

Rodgers disappointed by defeat

“It’s a big disappointment because we had two home games this week (the other is his former club Swansea on Sunday) that we felt were opportunities for us. “But we’ll go again and get back in tomorrow. We’ve got a game away in the Europa League (against …Football365.com”

For those that can stomach watching it, here are the highlights from last night’s game. By the way, Ben Foster did have a cracking game. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a keeper that makes match winning saves for you.
