Remembering Hillsborough

There’s a lot going on at the moment as we all know. So much devastation and grief throughout the world. Let’s hope we are in a position to return to some sort of normality seen enough. Stay safe. Amidst all the chaos and devastation however, all Liverpool fans will be well aware what today is. So, let’s take a moment and spend some time in remembering Hillsborough.

Remembering Hillsborough

Isn’t it a beautiful day today weather wise. Well, it is where I am anyway. In fact, as I look out of the window it reminds me so much of the weather on that fateful day, 15th April 1989. Those old enough to remember will recall that the weather was glorious that day as well. Not a cloud in the sky.

The similarities with the weather end there though. What I mean, is that as of today, during these dark hours we are currently all facing, there is sunshine. Whereas, on 15th April 1989 we were in the middle of sunshine with our darkest hours to follow.

Remembering Hillsborough – 15th April 2020

Thirty one years. How quickly has that gone for some. And yet, for so many, time has stood still. The worldwide pandemic we are currently all involved in with the associated lockdown means that we can’t be remembering Hillsborough in the ways in which we would like. That’s understandable. We’re all in this together. But that’s not to say, we won’t be able to pay our own tributes today.

Remembering Hillsborough – Let’s See What’s Happening

As we know, there will be no gatherings today to honour the 96 unlawfully killed 31 years ago. Initially the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) planned to hold one final service at Anfield. But of course, this has been cancelled.

Other gatherings have been cancelled as well of course. For instance, since 2013, people have gathered on Old Haymarket in Liverpool city centre at the site of a Hillsborough public memorial. Tributes have been made at gatherings in Sheffield, the venue of the disaster of course. These will not take place. And rightly so.

Let’s not forget also, those who can’t face the anniversary at all, or on their own. As they can’t meet up, this year is particularly more difficult. So, for those of us that will be remembering Hillsborough, let everyone see how strong our togetherness and unity is.

Self isolation will not prevent Liverpool fans throughout the world remembering Hillsborough.

As in this isolation period, people have been showing support for key workers like the NHS through online Zoom meetings. Or, showing their support via more visual displays of support with posters, or other mementoes being presented in their windows.

Some will light a candle. Others will be phoning friends at the appropriate time.

I have just heard on local, North-West TV news, that some are planning to remember the anniversary by holding a two minute applause on their own doorstep at 3:06pm.

Remembering Hillsborough – What Will You Be Doing?

For my part I have my two page centrefold memorial tribute from the Sunday Mirror from 23rd April 1989 ready to be placed in our front window. Somebody framed this tribute and left it in the porch of the house I lived in back in 1989. I still treasure it.

Poignantly the heading says, “the band played You’ll Never Walk Alone but The Kop choir stayed silent. You can’t sing when you’re choking back the tears

Also, as we can’t visit the Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield, we can have it visit us in this post…..and remember Hillsborough in that way.

You’ll Never Walk Alone

Also, we can sing along to our famous club anthem at 3:06 pm in tribute. Here’s a link to the video of the anniversary You’ll Never Walk Alone as sung last season at Anfield in our match against Chelsea, taken from my Twitter account.
