Today’s Match Of The Day pundit and former Reds classy centre-half, Mark Lawrenson was born in Preston. He signed for Liverpool from Brighton for £900,000 in 1981. Lawrenson would go on to win many honours while at Liverpool, including and perhaps most significantly, the European Cup in 1984, when Liverpool beat Roma in their own stadium, the Stadio Olimpico.

As well as this major triumph, Lawrenson also won five League titles, three League Cups, two Charity Shields and one FA Cup during his glittering Anfield career.

Although born in Preston, Lawrenson played many times for the Republic of Ireland by virtue of his grandfather being born in Waterford.
