Welcome To Anfield Diogo

Wow!!! It’s like waiting for a bus in a sense. You wait for ages for one signing to happen then all of a sudden two come at once. Hot on the heels of our “Welcome To Anfield Thiago” post we are now announcing “Welcome to Anfield Diogo.” Has any other Premier League club signed two players with both names ending in ‘go’ on consecutive days? A bit of footie trivia nonsense there for you.

So anyway – Welcome To Anfield Diogo.

Unlike the regular updates over a longish period with the Thiago transfer, our capture of Diogo Jota almost went right under the radar. Very much like our transfer captures in days of old in many respects. After missing out on Timo Werner many fans thought a back up forward wasn’t going to happen. But, here we go, Diogo Jota has arrived for an initial fee of £41m, rising to £45m. Well, effectively £34m if you factor in the transfer of Ki Jana Hoever (good luck by the way in your new career at Wolves) going the other way.

Some fans are well pleased with the news, while others are indifferent it would seem. That latter bit isn’t a bad thing really. Why? Because this transfer has all the hallmarks of a typical Jurgen Klopp signing. Any possible indifference by fans is no disrespect to Jota. None whatsoever. It’s just that after the forum rumours of Werner and even Mbappe, Jota wasn’t even mentioned. And, as I say, that is so typical of Klopp. And fitting in with the general opinion of all of Klopp’s and Michael Edwards dealings – if he’s good enough for Jurgen he is most certainly good enough for me.

As I’ve always maintained – in Jurgen we trust. Why wouldn’t we.

What Will Diogo Jota Bring To Liverpool?

The signing of Diogo Jota is so reminiscent of our signings of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in many ways. More so Mane as it happens as his style and his stats at Wolves are very similar to Sadio’s. The mention of his style is not to say he can only be an alternative to Mane. Not at all. One thing that Jurgen Klopp likes in his players is versatility. And Jota certainly gives us that. He can play in any of the forward positions. Not just wide left. And he can play a bit deeper as well.

Other typical Jurgen Klopp traits are his age, his as un yet fulfilled potential, his work rate, pace, aggression and his character. Using Mane and Salah as examples, we should maybe start to be excited about this signing. No doubt Klopp will nurture him along in the same way he nurtured Mane and Salah. And, as we know, how have they turned out.

Having not really given much thought about Diogo Jota until Friday just gone, I am now very much excited about his arrival.

All of a sudden in the space of two days our squad has suddenly on a whole new shape, variation and depth. Well done to Michael Edwards and his team again for the work they have done. And a big thanks to Jurgen Klopp as well of course.

So, “Welcome To Anfield Diogo” – we hope your time here is both enjoyable and successful.
