Liverpool FC: Loss to West Brom Costs More Than 3 Points for Reds

Well after all the pre-season hype, we start our League campaign with a crushing defeat at West Brom by 3-0. So much went wrong on the day and the new boys didn't really shine, but the biggest problems were a hangover from last season's woes. Poor finishing, particularly from Luis Suarez and a lack of cutting edge. Apart from his missed chances, Suarez had a good game otherwise and as ever he looked to be Liverpool's best player.

Yet again though Stewart Downing failed to deliver. His performance was poor and overall he hasn't hit any heights whatsoever since signing just over 12 months ago.

In short, we were quite good in the first half but a shambles in the second. Mind you we weren't helped by Phil Dowd, a totally inept referee who himself has started this new season as badly as his overall performances last season. I remember a few years ago when he refereed the League Cup Final between Man Utd and Aston Villa. Nemanja Vidic brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor in the first six or seven minutes for, not only a nailed on penalty, but also a nailed on red card. The penalty was given but no card at all for Vidic. Quite staggering.

Then last season, in Liverpool's opening game against Sunderland, Kieron Richardson scythed down Luis Suarez for again, a nailed on penalty and a nailed on red card. Again, only the penalty given. How on earth he saw a penalty for Agger's challenge is beyond me. That was bad enough but amazingly he couldn't get his red card out of his pocket quick enough. When they missed that ghost penalty, he couldn't wait to award them another. The second was an even bigger joke than the first.

Apart from the make believe penalties, quite how he booked Lucas and Johnson but not Olsson and Mulumbu was staggering. The man is a joke as a referee and it is about time that the FA made referees accountable and made them explain their decisions. They are over-protected and hide behind this shield the FA put up for them.

Anyway, let's hope we can re-group for two important games this week against Hearts on Thursday and Man City on Sunday.

Liverpool FC: Loss to West Brom Costs More Than 3 Points for Reds

"Worst of all for Rodgers and Liverpool was that Rodgers' former club Swansea were rampant at Queens Park Rangers and went home with a 5-0 win. Meanwhile, Liverpool target Clint Dempsey sat out and watched his Fulham side demolish Norwich City 5-0 …Bleacher Report"

Not many positives to take out of the game against West Brom but I suppose Joe Allen did reasonably well and again Luis Suarez was Liverpool's star performer. You can see the best of Luis Suarez from the opening day defeat below.
