Has everyone calmed down now after the euphoria of Tuesday night? What a great night. What a great result. One of Liverpool’s finest away European performances to add to the many others. Now things have calmed down a bit, all eyes on this Saturday when we play Bournemouth at Anfield. Before then let’s a look back in time and see what happened on this day 12th April in days gone by.

Emlyn Hughes scored his 3rd goal of the season as we beat Leicester City at Filbert Street on this day 12th April 1969. Ian Callaghan scored the other as we kept up the pressure on leaders Leeds United. The win kept Liverpool’s title hopes alive as they trailed Leeds by five points with a game in hand and a crucial game against the leaders to come. Sadly the title challenge didn’t end successfully as the draw Leeds earned at Anfield clinched them the title.
On this day 12th April 1986, Ronnie Whelan scored a hat-trick as Liverpool hammered Coventry 5-0. Whelan scored two in the first half as Liverpool led 2-0 at the interval.
Further second half goals by Jan Molby, Ian Rush and a final strike from Whelan completed the rout. The win kept Liverpool on course for our 16th title. The 1985/86 season of course was the season we won the League and FA Cup double. Beating Everton of course in the final of the FA Cup.
Included in Coventry’s line up that day was our former keeper, Steve ‘Oggie’ Ogrizovic, Alan Brazil and the recently deceased Cyrille Regis. On paper they didn’t have that bad of a side. But in those days, Liverpool were incredibly efficient and consistent. The attendance on the day was a healthy 42,729 as we closed in on another exciting, successful end of season finale.
