On This Day 17th April 1982- King Kenny scores the winner against West Brom

On This Day 17th April

With West Brom up next for The Reds, it may be worth remembering on this day 17th April. Kenny Dalglish scored the winner on this day 17th April 1982 against The Baggies at Anfield. Kenny’s 71st minute strike earned Liverpool a ninth consecutive victory. The win put us well on the way to another league title and enabled us to open up a five point gap over nearest rivals, Ipswich Town.

For many reading this it will come as a surprise that Ipswich Town were our closest rivals. However, for us old enough, we can well remember when we used to go head to head with Ipswich for a few years for the title. In those days Ipswich were a quality side. Managed by Bobby Robson, Ipswich had top players throughout the team. Players like strikers Paul Mariner and Alan Brazil. Midfielders John Wark, Eric Gates, Frans Thijssen and Arnold Muhren. It was very rare to see foreign players in English football in those days, so the appearance of Thijssen and Muhren was a somewhat novelty and a breath of fresh air to be fair.

In defence, Ipswich boasted Allan Hunter, George Burley, the excellent Kevin Beattie and Mick Mills. Between sticks stood Paul Cooper. As I remember he wasn’t the tallest of keepers, but very agile though.

Liverpool’s Title

We eventually went on to win the league by four points. We finished with 87 points, to Ipswich’s 83. Just as close at the other end of the table as well. Only four points separated 16th placed and 21st placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. There were 22 teams in the league then, so the league programme consisted of 42 league games.

Just goes to show how football has changed. Bournemouth finished 4th that year……but in the old 4th Division (now known as Division Two). I was studying in Sheffield in the 1981/82 season so I didn’t get to too many of our fixtures. I did however go to watch Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday now and then though. One game I remember well was Sheffield United v Wigan in the old 4th Division. There was an incredible gate of 22,000 there as The Blades beat their close league rivals 1-0. I remember ex-Red Larry Lloyd was playing for Wigan. In fact he was player-manager and he guided Wigan to promotion in only their 4th season in the Football League.

Also On This Day 17th April

Also on this day 17th April, this time in 1922 though, we were homing in on another league title. With three games still to play, manager David Ashworth was guiding Liverpool to a 2-1 victory against Burnley. Coupled with Ashworth’s former club, Oldham Athletic, beating second placed Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Boundary Park, Liverpool lifted their third title.

Back to nowadays, let’s hope that the events on this day 17th April 1982 is a good omen for this coming Saturday. It does look ominous for West Brom. Hopefully they don’t have a last “Hurrah” at our expense. Another three points for us will put us in an even stronger position to cement a top four finish.
