On This Day 18th March

During all this coronavirus chaos, a bit of normality amidst all the virus updates and the possible impact on football. No mention for now on here of the impact of the virus on football. Not even a mention of the delightful, self serving,  Karen Brady. For now!! No, some normality as I say. In fact, a trip down Memory Lane. On this day 18th March in days gone by we have a couple of memorable events to relive.

Back on this day 18th March 1990 we enjoyed an impressive 2-1 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The scoreline was close but in reality the win was more comfortable than that as I recall. Two cracking goals from the mercurial (great word that isn’t it!!) John Barnes put us well in the driving seat.

But significantly the latter stages of the game became a bit more edgy after what can only be described as one of the best, if not THE best, own goal of all time. Not under any pressure, Ronnie Whelan, chipped his own keeper, Bruce Grobbelaar, from 30 yards with about five minutes to go. Now, I know it’s been well documented that Whelan was a Man Utd fan as a boy, but come on!!! That is taking it a bit far!!!

Have a look at the goal highlights below……

The impressive win, left us two points adrift of leaders Aston Villa and in the meantime left our friends from down the East Lancs three points above the bottom three. Happy days!!!

Here’s another on this day 18th March game to relive. This time……

On This Day 18th March 2010

Two goals from Fernando Torres and another from captain, Steven Gerrard, put us into the quarter finals of the Europa League. The 3-0 win against Lille, after losing 1-0 away in the first leg, ensured our relatively smooth passage. Gerrard levelled the tie early on with a 9th minute penalty.

Following on from Gerrard’s opener, Torres struck in the 49th and 89th minutes.

No doubt we have had other memorable events on this day 18th March, but for this post, just these two golden oldies.

I hope you enjoyed the brief trip down Memory Lane. Stay safe folks.
