On This Day 28th April-Title Number 18 Was Clinched

On This Day 28th April

On this day 28th April is quite a significant day from days gone by. We have two titles win and a stirring comeback. We good at those aren’t we. And we like them both as well, hey. Going in date order, let’s have a look at the significant dates on this day 28th April.

On This Day 28th April 1973

A title win to celebrate. A 0-0 draw with Leicester at Anfield saw us grab our 8th title. The draw put us three points ahead of nearest rivals Arsenal. With only the one game in hand and only two points for a win, Arsenal faced a tricky game at hand away at Leeds. And tricky it was as Leeds battered Arsenal 6-1.

An added significance of the title win was that it was Bill Shankly’s last title.

Moving on……

On This Day 28th April 1976

We like the odd comeback don’t we!!! Well we must do as we’ve achieved so many over the years. This time it was in the UEFA Cup Final against Bruges. In those days, the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) was a two leg affair. The first leg was at Anfield in front of almost 50,000 fans.

As what became a sort of a regular situation, we found ourselves trailing in a significant game. Going in 2-0 down at half-time, Liverpool had seemingly a mountain to climb. But, let’s have it right, it’s Liverpool we’re talking about here. We don’t “give up” do we. And, as it has been shown on several occasions, we don’t always do “easy” either do we.

But as this was a two leg tie, having two away goals against us did have a different feel about it. Other clubs may have thought there was no way back. Liverpool? Nah….there’s always a chance of a way back.

And so it proved to be. Three early second half goals in the 59th, 61st and the 64th minutes saw us turn our fortunes around. Hmmm……three quickfire goals in the second half. Where else have seen that I wonder?

Liverpool’s goals were scored by Ray Kennedy, Jimmy Case and Kevin Keegan. The game ended 3-2 to Liverpool. But, of course, as it was a to leg affair, we still had a tricky second leg to negotiate. Bruges after all had those two away goals. How did we fare in the second leg? Watch this space to find out!!!

Finally, in days gone by on this day 28th April.

This date is a very significant date for me and my friend who sits next to me in The Kop. Back then, when The Kop was standing of course, we saw Liverpool win their 18th……and last league title. We never envisaged then that was to be our latest league title win.

Only a few weeks ago when number 19 was seen to be getting ever closer, we reminded ourselves of this day in 1990. What is weird is that it seems so fresh in the mind on the one hand. But then on the other, 30 years!!! Who would have thought it? Certainly we didn’t back then.

On the day we beat QPR 2-1 at Anfield to clinch the title with two games to go. Mind you on the day itself, a title clinching win seemed unlikely as with less than five minutes to go, our nearest rivals Aston Villa were beating Norwich 3-1 at Villa Park.

But then two late Norwich goals – two very late Villa goals – and cue wild celebrations on The Kop. I remember I had my transistor radio with me (remember them?) and I was relaying what was unfolding at Villa Park.

So, on this day 28th April for these 3 particular years – happy days!!!

****BREAKING NEWS****

Just as finished this article I heard the sad news that Michael Robinson, our former striker, who was a member of our treble winning squad in 1984 has sadly passed away. He was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2018. RIP Michael Robinson, taken from us too soon at the age of 61.
