On This Day 6th May-Michael Owen Historic Goal

On This Day 6th May

May, it’s that time of the year isn’t it. What is the name of that book again. “Here We Go Gathering Cups In May.” It’s a great book if you haven’t read it yet. A couple of significant events to give a mention to on this day 6th May. In chronological order.

On This Day 6th May 1980

On this day 6th May 1980 another title to celebrate. Bob Paisley wins yet another league title for The Reds. This time the team finishing second was our old buddies from down the M62. Manchester United finished two points behind Liverpool. Even if Manchester United had won their last game against Leeds at Elland Road, it was unlikely they would topple Liverpool as our goal difference was so much better before our last two games. Only two real freak bad results really and an away win for Manchester United at Elland Road would make things more interesting.

As it was, Leeds won 2-0 anyway, so the title was Liverpool’s. Our 12th title triumph and a fitting one at that. It as the 100th competitive Division One season. A very significant title indeed.

Another notable day to mention involves a player who is Marmite to a lot of Reds supporters.

On This Day 6th May 1997

It was on this day 6th May 1997 that a certain Michael Owen became Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer. He scored 16 minutes into his Liverpool debut. Owen was 17 years and 144 days old when he netted his historic goal against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Unfortunately though, it wasn’t a goal in a winning performance. We lost 2-1 to The Dons, thereby ending our title challenge.

Owen does not hold that particular record any more however. Ben Woodburn netted against Leeds in November 2016 to become Liverpool’s youngest scorer. Woodburn was 17 years and 45 days at the time.

How long will this records stand for I wonder?
