Carabao Cup Winners

Congratulations to Liverpool. Carabao Cup Winners 2022. And the first cup knockout domestic trophy win for Jurgen Klopp. Another nice addition to his CV. And what an impressive CV it is anyway. I’m sure though that the Carabao Cup wasn’t top of the trophy target list at the start of the season. That’s not to downplay the trophy or the competition but I’m sure the League and the Champions League was top of the pile. But winning it is a great feeling for players, management, owners, all the staff and the fans of course.

Winning any and all trophies is always a great feeling. Stating the obvious it adds to the overall trophy haul and not only that success breeds confidence. Hopefully it sets us up for the remaining two months plus for the remainder of the season. A trophy at this stage of the season is all good and the following wind feelgood factor will remain in the weeks going forward.

But what of the game itself though. To be fair as far as goalless draws go, it was very entertaining. And to be honest it was a hard one to call. Both sides contributed to a very entertaining game. It ebbed and flowed. Both sides had moments of dominance and moments of chances. And both sides had goals disallowed. A Chelsea fan I was talking to was so exasperated with both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku. Was Werner born offside?

Also the managers played their part of course. Quite significantly with the substitutions. In recent games our substitutions have gone in our favour and resulted in positive outcomes, but yesterday they seemed to help turn the tide against us. That sometimes happens. The momentum changes while new substitute additions adjust to the pace of a game. And of course you have to factor in how a rival coach reacts to opponents subs. Thomas Tuchel of course is no mug. A top quality coach with an abundance of talent at his disposal.

Making a change as well of course can be a big gamble. And the gamble Tuchel made in swapping his keepers backfired. We all have a degree in hindsight, but it did seem to be a strange decision at the time. Edouard Mendy was having a blinding game. To see the board go up and know he was being hooked for the penalty shoot out must have rankled a bit. But, it worked out to our advantage. So all good from our point of view.

Yes, another trophy in the cabinet and one to enjoy for a while. Another big game on Wednesday though so we can’t get too carried away. Norwich up next in the FA Cup. Let’s see if we can take a step closer to another shot at another trophy.

Well done Jurgen and the Boys. I hope John Henry and Linda Pizzuti enjoyed their trip over and liked what they saw. Onwards and upwards. Roll on Norwich.
