Robbie Keane On The Kop

When it was first rumoured that Robbie Keane was being linked with Liverpool it was dismissed in many quarters as pure speculation. I must admit I thought it was merely a rumour but deep down I knew that he was exactly the kind of player we needed.

It’s been well documented that he is a clever player. Anyone who has seen him play will confirm that. As well as his cleverness he will also bring goals and passion. He has gone on record to say that joining Liverpool is his dream move and that if it wasn’t Liverpool then he would gladly have stayed at Tottenham. I firmly believe this. As well as being impressed with his undoubted ability, I have also always been impreseed with Keane’s attitude. He certainly does not come across as a prima donna type player.

I know he is well rewarded but I truly believe he would have signed for Liverpool even if they were not a “top four” club and in the Champions League.

No doubt Tottenham fans will be sad to Keane leave. Hopefully, their loss will be our gain. In saying that I mean no disrespect to Spurs. Having seen at first hand how well he linked up with Berbatov at Anfield last season we can only hope that he will link up just as well with Fernando Torres. I know they have only played in friendlies so far but the early signs are encouraging. Keane’s unselfish running and link up play should suit Torres down to the ground.

I, like many thousands of Liverpool fans, am looking forward to the start of the season and just hope that we can embark on a true title challenge. With Keane’s style of play I also think that not only Torres will benefit. Don’t be surprised to see improved performances and contributions from the likes of Kuyt, Babel, Benayoun and others.

Like last season when we signed Torres, we have again gone out and bought a quality “finished article” so credit to Rafa and all the powers that be that have made these transfers happen. The owners and Rick Parry (quite rightly so in my opinion) have been heavily criticised on occasions for missing out on major transfer targets and we have ended up with filling the squad with just that, squad players. Let us hope we are back on the bigger playing field. Only time will tell.

Welcome to The Kop Robbie Keane and welcome to the Fields of Anfield Road. Now go and make us dream.
