We Are Through But What A Struggle

Well we did manage to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League with our narrow 1-0 win against the very impressive Standard Liege. But, again we weren’t very impressive. At the risk of sounding like a stuck record it is clear to everyone whaere the problem lies. Width, or rather the lack of it. It’s not only a lack of wingers but the full-backs are not too clever coming forward either.

It’s wrong to criticise Kuyt and Benayoun for their performances as wide players as they neither of them is a winger. The good thing about us is that even when we struggle to create openings we are difficult to beat. A special mention here to Skrtel. He is getting better and better game by game.

The main thing is is that we’re through. Would we rather play well and lose or, as they say, “win ugly”. Mind you three “ugly” wins so far this season means that surely such luck can’t go on indefinitely.

Credit to Standard Liege. They were a quality side with plenty of pace and power in all areas of the pitch. In a way I hope they win the Belgian League and are able to enter the group stages automatically. They definitely would not be out of place in the group stages. Their fans were a credit to the club as well as they not only sang throughout the game but also after the game even though they had lost it in such a cruel way.

Anyway onwards and upwards. Group stages and the re-acquaintance for us with Luis Garcia and Athletico with El Nino. Great games ahead.
