11th May 1996

Liverpool fell to a late Eric Cantona goal to lose 1-0 to Manchester United in a very poor FA Cup Final at Wembley. The game proved to be Ian Rush’s last game for Liverpool as he left the club to join Leeds United after scoring 346 goals for Liverpool over the course of 16 years.

Almost 12,000 fans packed into Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground as Liverpool played Wrexham in European Cup Winner Joey Jones’ testimonial. The game ended 2-2, with Liverpool’s goals coming from Ian Rush and Don Hutchison. Jones signed for Liverpool from Wrexham in July 1975 for £110,000.
