Great Run Continues

Never mind the quality feel the width is a well known phrase used in a variety of situations. Yesterday was a case in point to a certain extent. At times we played really well, but at times we were slightly sloppy. The important thing though is that our great run continues. In league games obviously as we lost to Napoli last week in the Champions League. But, fifteen wins on the bounce is an incredible achievement.

A 2-1 win away at Chelsea is a great result at any time in any circumstances. But such is our form and overall stature now, a 2-1 win where we are not battering teams leaves us open to criticism in some quarters. Again, some of the posts on the club’s official forum, match day thread, were quite negative.

Bear in mind though, there are some (many) who just go on the forums to moan anyway. It is incredible at times to have a read of the thread after a game has finished. Sometimes you would think that we were playing terribly and were fighting relegation.

Anyway, people will still moan come what may. However the win was achieved it was a great three points. In a way, Chelsea’s transfer ban has galvanised the club in a way. New manager, Frank Lampard, has been forced (or maybe not as he may have played them anyway) to play some of his promising youngsters. And fair do’s they have some good ‘uns.

But enough about Chelsea. Our great run continues over the last 15 games as a result of some scintillating performances and some (not many) games where we’ve had to grind out a positive result.

Winning At Stamford Bridge

As mentioned, a win at Stamford Bridge is always a fantastic result at any time. It is always a difficult place to go to. Yesterday was no different. Two cracking goals from set pieces put us in a strong position at 2-0. It could have got even better early in the second half. Bobby Firmino, who scored the second with a well placed header, brought out a cracking save from the Chelsea keeper. We also almost benefited from an oggy. Again, a great save by the Chelsea keeper.

However with 20 minutes to go, N’golo Kante scored a good goal for Chelsea then it was really “game on”. But here’s the thing about our current side, we have a certain resolve about us now. We can dig in and win ugly as the phrase goes. Isn’t that what title challenging teams do now and then. They find a way to win.

So, ignore any negative comments about how we played the last 20 minutes yesterday. Most importantly our great run continues.

Some great performances yesterday. Just to mention three (not only three great performances though), Adrian, Matip and Alexander-Arnold were excellent. Hasn’t Adrian grown in stature over the last few games? Matip? Would anyone say he is our best performing defender at the moment?

Up Next

Sheffield United in the Premier League next Saturday in the early kick-off. Before then, MK Dons in the Carabao Cup. But looking at league only for now, next Saturday is a biggie. Sheffield United are in a decent run of form. They themselves came away from Stamford Bridge with a draw after being 2-0 down. A 2-0 win at Goodison on Saturday was further evidence that they are going to be a tough opponent.

Fingers crossed that our great run continues next Saturday. Winning breeds confidence. Once a side gets in such a run and a momentum is rolling it is difficult not to get excited. But we’re not getting excited yet at all. Injuries and suspensions can have a huge affect, so let’s not get carried away. But, on the flipside, let’s also enjoy the moment and hope the great run continues for as long as it can. Another 32 games would be nice.
